How do you practice?
Peak Level VS Average Level
I am under the impression a lot of Europeans are practicing towards improving their personal best wheras a philosophy taught in Asia as well as in the Kiev circus school is to be practicing towards improving the average level.
Example:
For a 3 diabolo record of 40 catches.
A peak level training would be to reach as many catches over 40 as possible
An average level training would be to reach 10 times 20 catches.
Both approaches offer different benefits.
Specialisation VS Versatility
Specialization gives you the advantage of mastery, enabling you to excel in one area. On the other hand, specialized skills may not be as transferable to other styles. For example, the low, high and vertax diabolo techniques are different sets of skills. However, some notions like timing can still be transferable.
The versatility approach emphasizes exploring different styles and trick and acquiring a diverse set of skills rather than becoming an expert in a single domain. The idea is to gain a broader perspective and a well-rounded skill set. However, learning multiple diabolo styles simultaneously can require more time and effort. It is natural to tend to specialise in what we like. Think about versatility within your specialisation.
Example:
Working on endurances is a key exercice to specialise. It will force the body to find the necessary movements. For versatility, consider implementing different diabolo styles to an already established one. Change the body position, the speeds and amplitudes of tricks. This will offer you different perspectives on a familiar set of tricks.
Visualisation
Visualisation can play a crucial role in enhancing motor control. By repeatedly imagining the correct techniques, the neural pathways associated with the movements are reinforced.
Example: A common method is to record training sessions and to watch the video in a loop. It is recommended to simply visualise the trick in your mind from different points of view. Try changing the speed of your visualisation, both on video and mentally.
Goal Driven
Setting the right goals will go a long way. Dreaming too big can lead to frustration while not being ambitious enough can be a reason for feeling stuck.
Example:
If a trick is too difficult, try breaking it down into smaller parts. That will likely provide a more comprehensive progress and that will bring satisfaction.
Consistency
Remember that being consistent contributes to better accuracy, mental confidence and adaptability. It is crucial for skill acquisition in general. Keep in mind that too much training can be detrimental. It is important to listen to your motivation
Example:
Try starting with short sessions every second day and as you feel comfortable, gradually increase the lenght of your training or try it everyday. Be selfaware and drink water whenever you feel a need for it. Changing the location of the training can stimulate your motivation.
